They said
All teenagers scare
The living shit out of me
They could care less
As long as someone'll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they'll leave you alone
But not me
- My Chemical Romance, Teenagers
So I had this wicked 3-part dream a few nights ago. And it has been haunting me ever since.I swear.
What the deal with it is that there's this dystopian society (I'm thinking that The Handmaid's Tale influenced me more than I thought it did) where teenagers are "locked up". Well, not really locked up, but they're confined to these old abandoned supermarkets because they're "too dangerous" for the rest of society. So they're expected to get all that drugs, sex, alcohol, rock 'n' roll biz out of their system. And then the government in charge kind of fixes them up (operations, etc.) before releasing them back into the real world.
The place is an old supermarket, yes, but it has a bunch of floors above it. I remember vividly, from my dream, a room of mahogany and white marble used for srs bsnss meetings. And the upper floors were all dedicated to living quarters for the teens (think musty hotel). The kids are allowed no media inside so there's no television or internet. The only electronics are those used to help the teens live their "dreams" (because who hasn't wanted to become a rockstar when they were an adolescent?). Then there are these designated times for rich companies to come in and parade about their propaganda.
There do remain a few good kids -- ones who want to go out and work, so they're not denied that right, though it's a tricky business.
Part of my dream (did I mention that there were 3 parts? o_o) had me going to work, but being stopped and asked to help some woman give birth to a baby. And it all had to be very secret because there were rumours of children being taken away to be raised "properly".
So it was a pretty messed up dream, but it got me thinking.
And then it got me apologizing to everything else that I've started to write, but never really got around to finishing.
Because I really want to write about this. I guess that there'll be a few main characters that I follow, but I want to show as many different views in this place as possible since everyone gets something different out of it.
Like, the bad kids get to live out their dreams -- but does it really fix anything?
Some good kids have bad things happen to them -- does the operation at the end really fix you up?
I just hope that I don't lose all of the strands of this story before I am able to find the right words and write them down.

By the way, Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale was such a twisted read, but it was fascinating. Definitely something I would suggest.

And no, I'm not a big MCR fan anymore, but the whole situation reminded me of this song.
