Restaurant circuit.

Ahh Remembrance Day. A big thank you to all the soldiers who gave up their lives and sacrificed so much so I could live in this beautiful country and blog here without being censored. God knows I should be censored for being so asinine sometimes~

Today was a day of eating out. I was passed out, sleeping during the normal breakfast hours so we won't count breakfast, but I've eaten out all day, it seems.

(And I think I just lost my amber ring from Germany. FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU. I am so mad at myself. I think I know I had it on when I was on my computer earlier (my memory is not cooperating with me right now), then I went to watch some TV with my mom, returned to my computer a few hours later and realized that... my finger felt suspiciously ring-less. Lesson of the day: Never ever ever ever wear/buy a ring that doesn't fit snugly. Shiiiiiiiiiiit. No one tell my parents. NO ONE. I think it's lost somewhere in my house. I'll deal with it.)

So lunch was downtown, all you can eat Japanese food at Toyama. Overall, I think it was alright, and the price was decent (though tax and gratuities were included?). It seemed fairly busy in there so trying to get the attention of a waiter/waitress/host(ess) was difficult sometimes, though "*waves arm* DAMN! ...oh hai" seemed to work wonders~ I don't really have any comments on the food. I'm not enough of a foodie to be able to discern what really is good or bad food. @____@ Yeah, I admit it: put a plate down in front of me with food on it, and I will eat it. Unless it's a plate full of veggies. Blech. I thought that the portions were kind of small, too (in terms of everything but gyozas and sushi), but given that it WAS all you can eat, then that's understandable. And it was kind of weird that the yakisoba tasted like Indian cuisine. Methinks they used too much curry powder or something? o___o

After Canada Line-ing it home (Toyama is in a really good skytrain-friendly location downtown, I have to say), I just watched hockey and some episodes of The Simpsons that my dad had recorded. My mom thinks I'm a lot like Lisa Simpson. Band geeks unite? Then it was off to dinner...

Dinner was at the reportedly "swanky" Kirin restaurant. Having been there before, I knew better than to expect a spectacular experience, but it was nice seeing my cousins again. :) Srsly, last time we were there, they were in a rush to kick us out because they were so booked or something. Anywho, nothing special. Or rather, I'm not overly fond of Chinese cuisine (yes, cousin, YOU'RE NOT THE ONLY ONE~) so the food there does nothing for me. Oh oh oh but there was this one super strange dish. Well, I mean, I wouldn't say I'm an expert when it comes to Asian cuisine or anything, but there was this dish I had not ever seen before: crab/prawn cake thingies (if you're familiar with the crab claw thingers, they're like that, minus the claw, and plus a prawn tail) covered in ... shaved almonds. o___o Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa? Yeah, and they tasted like that, too: WHAAAAAAAA? Er, props for trying to be creative, but srsly. No. Just. No. If this was fusion food, then I'd maybe understand (... probably not), but it isn't and this combination is strange and I do not like it. The mango pudding dessert thing was also different from what I'm used to. I think it was made of real mango because of the stringy, fruity bits in it. I'm not saying that it was bad, but it was definitely different-tasting. But the fact that the mould they used was in the shape of a heart kind of made me want to headdesk. Or rather, headtable.

Ahhh it was so weird having today off from school. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to be absolutely cranky tomorrow what with my co-op interview and the fact that I go back to waking up at crack o' dawn o'clock.

Mmmmm I think that I'm going to find/make a new layout for this blog during winter break. Someone remind me if I don't get shit done by January 3rd. ,____,"

And to all my readers in the Lower Mainland/Greater Vancouver/Metro Vancouver (there are too many names for this region), it looks like we might possibly be getting the worst winter in 55 years. That gondola idea for SFU is sounding very good right now. *crosses fingers and hopes that despite overlooking the ocean, UBC will get epic amounts of snow and will close*

Hmm, just had a lengthy discussion with my mom about that MacLean's article (which has since been edited, apparently to be less racist, i.e. no more "Asian kids all play piano and violin"? IDK I'm not looking at that article again.). I was completely unaware of how much of a shitstorm it raised on social networking sites and everything, though I'm sure this is a Canada-exclusive kind of a shitstorm. All I can say is, "Oh gee, thanks for bringing to light a non-issue, MacLean's. I'm not reading any of your shit ever again." I have never ever ever heard of any of the Canadian universities being "too Asian". Yeah, we joke that UBC is the University of a Billion Chinese, but really, there are plenty of people of other nationalities and races on campus and in the end, who the hell fucking cares? We laugh about it, but it doesn't mean anything. If that fact really bothered anyone, then they should leave; if you don't like it, go blow. Canada =/= "white". Canada = multicultural mosaic. And I'd like it to be more of a melting pot (care to give me slightly more than the time of day, hm?), but at the same time, I like that people retain their culture and traditions and as someone between cultures anyway, I think that it's great getting to see and experience that. I honestly never thought that this was any sort of "problem", at least from what I see. Maybe it's an east coast thing? Who knows.

Anyway, have a lovely day/night/whatever, my lovelies~
