This is where I find recommendations/suggestions/the occasional free download: Last.fm
Just look up an artist or two, check out the Similar Artists, and check out the charts (top tracks for 'This week' or '6 months'), or read some of the shouts on particular album pages.

Or for TEH best results...

1. Make an account
2. Download the Last.fm program
3. Download the scrobbler plug-in
4. Listen to your favourite artists/songs/whatever you like :)
5. Check out the recommendations Last.fm spits out at you by searching on Google.

Sure, it takes a little work, but it's an awesome way to find new stuff :D
Worst comes to worst, ask around in the shoutboxes of your favourite artists and someone is sure to respond. Last.fm has a fairly decent community. :)
